WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Leesburg Thunder used a late-inning charge to secure a 12-9 victory over the Winter Park Freedom on opening day.

The Freedom were able to jump on Leesburg starter Cameron Recny early, capitalizing four doubles in the 1st inning to take a 6-0 lead.

Zach West led off the third inning with a home run for the Thunder’s first run of the 2017 season. The Freedom responded quickly though plating a run of their own in the bottom half of the frame on an RBI single by Quinton Martinez.

Winter Park looked like they were on their way to a 1-0 start in the league for much of the day, carrying a 9-4 lead in to the 7th inning. That’s when Jaylin Dorsey went deep for his first home run of the season, sending a towering fly ball over the wall for a grand slam to pull the Thunder within one.

Leesburg was finally able to take the lead in the 8th inning, taking advantage of a pair of errors committed by the Winter Park middle infield.

The Freedom were not able to stage any late-game heroics of their own, giving Leesburg the opening day win.

The Lightning (1-0) will take the field again Tuesday as they travel to Sanford while Winter Park (0-1) will have to wait until Wednesday for a chance to get in the win column.
