DeLand visited the red-hot Winter Park Freedom on Monday to kick off Futures league play for the week. The Angels enjoyed an early 1-0 lead for just a half inning until the Freedom responded with 5 runs of their own in the bottom of the 1st.  Joe Cosgrove got the scoring started with an RBI single, followed by RBI walks from Cuda, Levin, and Gardner.  DeLand cut the lead to 2 in the 3rd inning after an RBI double from Dexter Martin, and an RBI single from Jordyn Smith. Winter Park blew the lead open in the 4th after a solo home run from Wade Cuda, followed by a 3-RBI bomb from centerfielder, Cam Meehan.  Dexter Martin homered in the 7th cutting the DeLand deficit to six, but it wasn’t enough as they fell to the Freedom, 12-6.  Winter Park’s Casey Wright picked up the win for the Freedom, giving up 3 earned runs and striking out 7 in his solid 6.2 innings of work.

Winter Garden outlasted Sanford on Wednesday behind one of the most impressive pitching performances we have seen all summer. Winter Garden’s Collin Booten proved worthy of his All Star selection, throwing five innings of PERFECT baseball. The 6’1 lefty allowed 0 hits, 0 runs, and 0 base runners in 5 innings of work on only 59 pitches. Winter Garden’s lone run was all they needed to edge the Monarchs, which came in the 4th inning behind an RBI single from Jake Jarvis.  Michael Demo was also impressive shutting the door for the Suns, throwing 4 innings just giving up 1 hit, earning him the save.
