Weekend Recap: July 20-22

DeLand paid Sanford a visit on Thursday to start off the Futures League action for the weekend. Sanford got out to an early 2-0 lead in the 1st inning on a 2-RBI single from All-Star Bobby Spitulski. The Monarchs extended their lead in the 3rd inning on yet another 2-RBI single from Spitulski. The Angels battled back in the 4th putting up 3 runs behind an RBI single from Acevedo, and a 2-RBI single from Andre Walden. DeLand tied the game up at 5 in the 7th inning on a sac fly from Dawson McLaughlin. Their lead was short lived before Brady Barnett gave Sanford the lead on a 2-RBI single. Christian Julius picked up the win for the Monarchs, striking out 6 batters in 5.1 innings of work. Ryan Rennebu picked up his first save of the year.

 

DeLand hosted Winter Garden on Friday and got out to an early lead on a Dex Martin SAC fly and an RBI-single from Walden. Winter Garden exploded for 6 runs in the 3rd inning behind offensive help from Jake Jarvis, Julio Montes, and Matt Morgan. Winter Garden added to their lead in the 7th inning to put the game out of reach, winning 12-2 in 8 innings. Jesse Coates picked up his 2nd win of the year, throwing 4 innings and striking out five. Josh Hancock was solid in relief for the Suns, allowing no runs in 3 innings of work.

 

Winter Park traveled out to Sanford on Saturday looking to extend their winning streak to 6 games. Sanford jumped out to an early lead behind RBI singles from Bobby Spitulski and Brady Barnett. The Freedom got one back in the 3rd thanks to an RBI single from Tyler Colson. Sanford extended their lead in the 5th after a 2-RBI homerun from Will Phillips. Winter Park’s Julian Nunez went yard in the 9th to bring the game to one run, but it wasn’t enough as Sanford held them off, winning the game 5-4. Michael McArdle picked up the win, throwing 5 innings and allowing just 1 run. Will Phillips was credited with the save.
