Leesburg’s powerful offense led to a run rule in the Thunder’s final regular season game on Monday against the Lake Mary Boom. The Thunder got on the board first, with Kobie Leonard (Lake Sumter) and Ariel Martinez (Saint Leo) both scoring early. The Boom matched the Thunder, scoring two runs, led by Rody Webb (Florida Southern) who doubled and later came around to score on an RBI single by Jake Allen (West Virginia Tech). Lake Mary would go on to score two more runs in the second inning to take the 4-2 lead. This wouldn’t last long though, as the Thunder came storming back scoring a one in the 3rd from a RBI single by Martinez, and another in the 4th off a double from Alexis Quevedo (Talladega). The Thunder pulled ahead in the top of the 5th inning. Leonard led the charge in the inning, hitting a single and a triple, bringing home two runners, and scoring two runs on his own. They kept this 12-4 lead into the 8th inning where they would put up two more runs to bring the score to 14-4. Jonathan Montes (Concord) was able to keep the Boom off the board in the bottom half of the inning to bring the game to an end due to a run rule. Leesburg’s key to success was the top of their lineup, which got hits 10 out of their 14 plate appearances, highlighted by Leonard’s 4-5 day with four runs scored. Hitting wasn’t the only story for the Thunder, as Tyler Moran and Jonathan Montes combined for four innings of one hit baseball in relief, striking out three. The Thunder will try to keep this momentum going into the FWL playoffs on Saturday, where they will host the Boom again.
