Deland was relentless in the season opener, defeating the Sanford Monarchs 12-2.
Going into the 4th inning, the game stood still at a highly competitive 2-0. That is, until sophomore Joseph DeSiena stepped up to the plate and belted a 3-run shot over the left field wall. This served as the spark for the entire Hammers lineup, as they tacked on 5 more runs in the 5th inning. A true team effort, twelve different batters reached base safely. Deland had a handful of players collect multiple hits, including Markeefe Beckett Jr. - who had a double and knocked in 2 runs.
Defensively, right-hander Ned Presley got the start for Deland and fanned 5 in his 4 innings of work. Caden Reeves came in relief and was very efficient - as the Trinity Baptist Eagle only needed 27 pitches in two shut-down innings.
Sanford offense did all their damage in the 5th, as Tyler Madl drove in a run on a single to right-center.
Both teams will be in action again on Wednesday - as Deland travels to Winter Garden and Sanford plays at the Warthogs.
