8th inning magic lifts Winter Garden

In the newest installment of the league’s oldest rivalry, Winter Garden defeated Winter Park 4-3. The first five innings of the game were the definition of a pitcher’s duel. Blake Jankowski got the ball for the Warthogs and threw 5 scoreless innings before giving up 2 in the top of the 6th. For Winter Park, David Richards got the start and was absolutely electric. His 9 strikeouts over 5.1 scoreless innings is among the best starts in the league this season.

The Warthogs entered the bottom of the 8th facing a 3-2 deficit. That is, until back-to-back RBI doubles from Lance Minson and Christian Nieves gave them a 4-3 lead. Hayden Konkler then closed the door in the top of the 9th giving the Warthogs a much needed victory. Konkler was brilliant, giving 3 total innings of scoreless relief out of the bullpen.

The victory for Winter Garden snaps a 3-game losing streak. They will shift their focus to Saturday as they visit the red-hot Lake Mary Boom. Winter Park will look to bounce back at home against Leesburg.
